The
Festival was set-up initially to fill the gap that the Australian Bush Music
Festival (at Glen Innes) left.
The
Festival aims to present Australian traditional and contemporary folk artists
presenting Australian stories, songs, poetry, yarns and dances. Some of the
themes have included Young Traditions, Vintage Voices, Women's Voices, Around
the Boree Log (Songwriters Circle), The Hillbilly Tradition, Songs of the Poets,
Old Children's Games, and Migrants to Australia.
The Festival recognises the contributions of the original inhabitants and the newcomers from all parts of the world and endeavours to present this unique mix of cultures.
The 1998 Festival theme was the contribution of immigration to the growth of Australia.
A major emphasis is placed on performer interaction with sessions, parades, band mix-up concert (on Monday), and playing for the dances.
The Festival starts on Wednesday night with a dance and concludes on Monday. The Friday Night concert is a 'Sampler' where all performers do a number of items as an introduction for the weekend. Saturday and Sunday have 4 venues operating from early in the morning to late at night.
There are concerts, theme workshops and concerts, dances, a Masked Ball (Sun), instrument workshops, and poetry events such as Poets Dinner, Poets Breakfast, Poets Brawl.
Monday includes the Band-Mixup Concert and a Finale Concert where all performers provide an item.
The Festival is organised is by volunteers from the Wongawilli Colonial Dance Club Inc., a non-profit incorporated association with the aims of promoting, preserving and performing Australia's rich folk culture.
Albion
Park is a situated on the South Coast of New South Wales and is 30km south of
Wollongong and 130km south of Sydney.
